The songs will often be ones that are familiar, but not too familiar, and they could be ones that you have not heard for quite some time. All interspersed with a breezy and cheery commentary on the music!  

Mike chats with representatives from government departments, not-for-profit organisations, clubs and societies, and any organisation that provides a service for the community. The topics are varied, and the target audience ranges from specific people to almost everyone in the greater Cairns community. In many cases, organisations can’t afford publicity, so on Mike’s program, they have an extended period of time to describe what they do for people, and in some cases what they need from the community to assist in their efforts. National music writer, musician and ABC regional radio broadcaster Tony Hillier has returned to the airwaves of Cairns FM89.1 – a station he once managed – to produce/present a new weekly program. “I initiated “Planet Jazz” to combine my favourite genres”, says Hillier, pointing out that since the genre’s early days, jazz players have coloured their musical canvasses from a global palette. “With the program, which features new releases each week along with classic blasts from the past, I endeavour to demonstrate that jazz is a broad and eclectic church. ‘Planet Jazz’ also features the only definitive gig guide to Cairns and environs”.
