Roman Rudnytsky returns to Cairns to perform Benjamin Britten’s Diversions for Piano (left
hand) and Orchestra, Op.21. This piece will be performed totally with the left hand. This piece will
be accompanied by the Cairns Youth Orchestra Chamber Ensemble and the Cairns Concert
Orchestra. The orchestras will also be joined by local invited musicians.
Cairns’ participants are being treated to a series of workshops playing alongside Roman under
the leadership of conductor Robert Johnstone. The workshops will culminate in a performance at
the Cairns Cathedral, Abbott St. on the 20 th August at 2pm.
Diversions for Piano (left hand) and Orchestra, Op.21 was written by Benjamin Britten for
Viennese born pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War 1.
The junior Cairns Youth Orchestra will be opening the concert with “Wizards in Winter” as
performed by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Words and music by Paul O’Neill and Robert Kinkel.

Dorothy Richmond President of the cairns Youth Orchestra said “This project brings the music
community together and, in particular, allows the Cairns Youth Orchestra Chamber Ensemble to
have a musical experience of a lifetime.”
Roman is also featuring solo piano works by Manuel de Falla, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin,
Rudnytsky, and Ravel.
