Debut Fiction Author Releases New Hostage Drama

Written by on November 11, 2022

In 2020, Brisbane author Carol Jarvis-Jackson resolved to fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a published writer. Following the heartbreaking loss of both her mum and husband to cancer, Jarvis-Jackson reassessed her life and happiness. ‘Realising the fragility of life and the unexpected situations we can find ourselves in has made me follow my dreams to make my life count for me, something I feel every person should do for themselves.’Hostage draws inspiration from the author’s life, where the main character suddenly finds her world has been turned upside down by unexpected events. The protagonist, Rachel Benson, considers her life to be on track. She has a successful career in PR and a long-term relationship with a great guy until one night when she finds herself in the back of a stolen car with three violent strangers, not knowing where she’s being taken or what will happen to her. Will she make it out alive, and if she does, what does the future hold for her when she makes it home.

Hostage is a fictional thriller told through the perspective of Rachel Benson, a twenty-five[1]year-old Brisbane woman who is abducted at gunpoint when she accidently stumbles across an armed robbery gone wrong. As the robbery falls apart one of the three gunmen takes Rachel hostage as insurance, forcing her at gunpoint to accompany the criminals on a crime spree that spans three Australian states. What unfolds is how Rachel faces her fear as she spends time in the company of the three criminals and is forced to question her own morals as she finds her outlook on both her life and her view of the criminals changing. There’s a bit of a thrill seeker buried inside all of us and this story teaches us that if you’re open to it, you might have the adventure of a lifetime and emerge a different version of yourself. Hostage will entertain and thrill the reader, offering an escape from life alongside the main character, Rachel. As you travel her journey with her, you’ll experience the different possibilities that could happen when you’re thrust into an unknown and unexpected situation. You’ll find yourself riding the highs and lows that Rachel experiences – the fear, the tension and the emotional upheaval that Rachel finds herself living as she must find a strength in herself that she didn’t know existed while she attempts to escape both her captors and the connection that develops with the kidnappers. You’ll find yourself exploring the notion that when you look deep enough at someone, there’s always going to be another side of them that wasn’t there when you first looked and leave you begging the question – ‘Can you really truly know someone?’
